The Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate
Nothing is better than coming in from the cold (be it skiing, walking home from somewhere, or just because you love it) than a warm drink waiting to be sipped.
This thick and creamy hot chocolate is the REAL DEAL. Made from scratch, with quality ingredients, it really is rich and chocolatey and creamy. And delicious.
Making it couldn’t be easier, simply assemble the ingredients, whisk em up, and put them in your slow cooker. Come inside, and serve it up with some whipped cream (maybe a dash of Irish cream if you like… and I like!), or marshmallows, and accompanied by some yummy chocolaty biscuits. YES I SAID BISCUITS. It’s a well known fact that being in the USA means I have had limited access to the things I enjoyed eating while living in New Zealand and Australia.
It’s a well known fact, because I whine about it regularly.
TimTam biscuits were a part of growing up. I remember when they first were available in New Zealand, and the excitement we felt seeing them on the store shelves. Clearly I’ve loved and been aware of good food for a really long time… ha. They are the perfect combination of chocolaty, crunchy biscuit & smooth cream layers. Want one??? Well, guess what?!
You guys. YOU GUYS!! Australia’s (and New Zealand’s) favorite treat is now Stateside!! I can now buy TimTam biscuits RIGHT here at Target!! This is super exciting, for a couple of reasons: 1) I can have them anytime I want, 2) I can have them anytime I want, without coming home to find a melted chocolatey mess on my doorstep (please don’t mail me chocolate in the Phoenix summer – it’s 115F/46C at its worst!) and 3)
The TimTam Slam
I never knew of it as being called a TimTam Slam until I moved to Australia, we always just did it this way because it’s awesome.
Basically, you eat a small corner of a TimTam, then eat the diagonally opposite corner. You then, use the biscuit as a straw, and suck slow cooker hot chocolate, coffee or milk through it. When the liquid hits your mouth, you then slam the entire thing in your mouth and devour it.
I totally tried to make a video of me doing this, but, um, I like to think that YOU think I have standards of decorum. Translation: I’m a hot mess, trying to talk with chocolaty biscuits and hot chocolate in my mouth.
But you? You should TOTALLY do it.
TimTams are available in a few different flavors. Original, Classic Dark, Dark Mint and Chewy Caramel. Look for them (this is for your own good) at Target!
Which flavor would YOU try first?
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup chocolate chips (I use semi sweet)
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 cups milk whole is best, but skim works!
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- In a small slow cooker, whisk together all ingredients.
- Cover, and heat on low for 2 hours, whisking regularly.
- Pour into mugs, top with marshmallows and/or whipped cream.
To make this drink faster, blend all the ingredients in a microwave safe bowl. Cook in microwave, whisking often, in 1 minute increments until chocolate is melted, and drink is smooth. Serve immediately, or keep warm in a small slow cooker.
