I love a good homemade dip at parties and, um, Tuesdays. Store bought dips are just fine, but this a cheesy, creamy blue cheese dip is my favorite thing to pull out of the fridge.
This is the perfect appetizer to mix up as guests arrive since it is only a 5 minute kind of job. Obviously, you can make it ahead and have it hang out in the refrigerator until you’re ready. Refrigerating it will make it a thicker consistency, too.
The rich flavor of the blue cheese pairs super well with fresh vegetables, like celery sticks, carrot sticks or baby carrots, bell pepper, and tomatoes. It also goes amazingly well with buffalo chicken tenders (or buffalo chicken wings), tortilla chips or potato chips of any kind.
Love dip? Try this Buffalo Chicken Dip, or Instant Pot Spinach Artichoke Dip, or my Greek Tzatziki Dip. If you’re craving a hot cheese dip, my queso dip is always a crowd-pleaser.
Adapt this
We use sour cream and mayonnaise, but it can be modified by switching out the sour cream for Greek yogurt, use a light mayo vs regular, add a little green onion! Basically, make it your own.
Why you’ll love this
- 5 minute prep time. Enough said?
- Easy to find and adapt ingredients.

Key Recipe Ingredients
Note: This highlights some ingredients. Full list is in the recipe card.
- Mayonnaise. Use a good quality mayonnaise for best results. You can use light mayo, olive oil based or anything you love the taste of.
- Sour Cream. Regular or low fat works just great, as does Greek yogurt.
- Blue Cheese. Any kind of blue cheese you like. The better the quality, the better the flavor of the dip. Roquefort, Stilton, Gorgonzola are all good, if you have a block of blue cheese, gently break it into crumbles. Blue cheese crumbles are fine too.
- Fresh Chives. This goes in the dip and serves as a pretty garnish too. You can use sliced green onions too, but cut them super finely. Fresh parsley can also be used as a garnish.
- Lemon Juice. Fresh lemon juice is the best option for this. If you don’t’ have lemon, use some white wine vinegar instead.
- Pepper. I use coarse ground black pepper. I don’t add salt, as the cheese is plenty salty enough! If you taste it and still needs salt, a pinch of kosher salt will do the trick.

Kylee’s Notes
Flavors will improve as the dip sits.
Refrigerate after mixing or serve.
You can adjust the intensity by increasing or decreasing the blue cheese quantity.
What to do with leftovers
Store in an airtight container (like a mason jar) in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Substitutions/Additions
Change out the mayonnaise for low fat mayo, substitute plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream to make this slightly healthier/lighter.
Add a dash of hot sauce to give it a tiny kick.
Add 1 or 2 minced fresh garlic cloves or some garlic powder to the dip.
FAQs
I use gorgonzola, stilton, or a Danish blue cheese that I adore. There are so many types of blue cheese to choose from, but the better the quality of the cheese, the better your dip will be.
Blue cheese crumbles from the cheese section of your local grocery store are great too.
Yes! Add a little extra lemon juice and a splash of milk to thin it out so it is pourable over a salad.
