Key Recipe Ingredients

Remember: this is just an overview and the why of the ingredients I choose here. The full list of ingredients and amounts is found in the printable recipe card below

  • Earl Grey tea. Classic black tea flavored with bergamot. Use more bags if you like stronger tea.
  • Milk. Whole milk creates the best foam, but oat, almond milk, or coconut milk work too.
  • Sugar or honey, vanilla extract. This sweetens up the latte, you can use store bought vanilla syrup if you prefer.

Steep the Earl Grey in hot water for a few minutes until it’s good and strong. While it steeps, heat the milk until hot (not boiling) on the stovetop or in the microwave and stir in vanilla and honey.

Froth the milk if you want a thick, foamy top. If you don’t want to measure vanilla and honey separately, vanilla syrup works great here.

Pour the milk over the tea, spoon on extra foam, and enjoy while it’s warm.

Troubleshooting Guide

  • Latte tastes weak. Steep the tea longer or use 3 tea bags.
  • Milk is not frothing. Try using milk with a bit more fat. Non dairy milks vary by brand.
  • Tea tastes bitter. Reduce steep time slightly.
  • Too sweet. Reduce sugar or honey next time.
  • Not sweet enough. Add a little more sweetener while the tea is hot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this iced?

Yes. Brew the tea strong, cool it completely, then pour it over ice and add cold frothed milk.

Do I need a frother?

No. A whisk, a jar with a lid that you shake, or an immersion blender can all create foam.

Can I add lavender?

Yes. Add a pinch of dried culinary lavender while steeping, or use a lavender syrup.

Kylee’s Notes

  • You can use vanilla syrup instead of honey and vanilla.
  • Steep the tea strong so the milk does not dilute the flavor too much.
  • Heat the milk gently to avoid scalding.
  • Froth the milk after heating for the best texture.
  • Sweeten the tea before adding milk so the sugar dissolves fully.
  • Serve immediately for the best flavor and temperature.
