Frequently Asked Questions

What can be made from chocolate syrup?

Drizzle on desserts. Use a squeeze bottle to put on ice cream as sundae topping, or to make your own chocolate milk! You can also use it to make hot cocoa!

A great idea is to put the syrup in a mason jar, add cold milk and microwave. Then just put a lid on and shake it up!!

Is homemade chocolate sauce and chocolate syrup the same thing?

Nope! Chocolate sauce (aka fudge sauce) contains chocolate and cream, and syrup contains cocoa powder and cornstarch

How do you thicken chocolate syrup?

We use cornstarch here, if you like it a little thicker, add a little more to the slurry.

How do you thicken chocolate syrup?

Do you have to refrigerate syrup? Yes – store it in a tightly sealed container. It won’t go BAD per se, but will last much longer if you take care of it.

I have included step-by-step photos and instructions, as well as tips and tricks in the post. If you’d rather skip all that, scoot right on down to the full recipe card located at the bottom of the post.

Key Recipe Ingredients

Remember: this is just an overview and the why of the ingredients I choose here. The full list of ingredients and amounts is found in the printable recipe card below

  • Sugar. Plain white granulated sugar works best, but raw sugar can also be used.
  • Cocoa Powder. I use unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Salt. I use kosher salt in this.
  • Vanilla extract. To flavor up that syrup!
  • Cornstarch. This will help to thicken the syrup.

Kylee’s Notes

For a SUPER chocolatey syrup, add a half teaspoon of instant coffee powder. You won’t taste it, but it will amplify the chocolate flavor.

How to store homemade chocolate syrup

Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
