I love to make my own seasoning blend recipes, and especially like that I can control what is and isn’t in them.

Buying them from the store is just fine, but what if the store is out, or there’s a snow storm and you are out of chili powder and NEED chili that day?

Making Chili Powder at home is very easy. It’s a simple spice mix of smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin oregano, seasoned salt, and ground ancho chiles.

Many people have made the mistake of using pure ground ancho chile powder in a recipe, and not a prepared chili powder spice blend. I’m sure that their food was way too spicy and inedible!

Is chili powder just ground chilis?

No! Chili powder contains ground chilis (I use Ancho), but is a blend of different herbs and spices

How much chili powder should I use?

If a recipe calls for “1 envelope” of chili seasoning, or chili powder, that will be 1 and 1/3 Tablespoons of this mix.

What to use Chili Powder for

Use it in recipes like my Crockpot Chili, Turkey Chili Mac or go for my favorite Vegetarian Chili.

Key Recipe Ingredients

Note: This highlights some ingredients. Full list is in the recipe card

  • Smoked Paprika. Regular paprika can also be used if that is what you have.
  • Oregano. I use the Mexican variety of oregano (it’s different to the Mediterranean kind)
  • Cumin. This is important and adds a warm, rich, earthy flavor.
  • Garlic Powder & Onion Powder. Staples for most home cooks, use as much or as little as you like.
  • Seasoned Salt. Regular table salt can also be used with a little ground pepper added.
  • Ground Ancho Chile Powder. You can use cayenne pepper if you have that handy. Ancho Chile powder is dried poblano chiles that have been ground.

Kylee’s Notes

In a typical envelope of chili seasoning, there are 1 1/3 Tablespoons (9 grams) if you need to convert this!

How to store Homemade Chili Powder

Store in an air tight container for up to 6 months.

Substitutions/Additions

You can change up the onion and garlic powder amounts if you prefer, and add some black pepper. This is a basic recipe that you can tweak to your own preferences.
